Tokoname Small Teapots Φ14 Studio Gala

Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture is famous for producing high quality teapots using vermillion clay. The vermillion clay contains abundant iron which is considered to be suitable for tea and sake. However, it is a difficult to work with and process.  This challenging material has brought about high craftsmanship and artistry in Tokoname's teawares.

The iron in the vermillion clay is believed to harmonise with tannin in tea to enhance the flavour. Since no glaze is used, these teapots absorbs tea incrustations and develop subdued patina and sheen. The colour of the black teapot  is a result of baking the teapot in a kiln after it went through the 1st firing stage.
