KODAI-MITSUWAN BOWLS

This exquisite series of urushi bowls  expresses the superior use of the traditional technique of "shading-off" paint which results in the gradation of colours. In this case, reddish vermillion fades into the black towards the base of the bowl.

Three sizes of KODAI-MITSUWAN can be nested which is practical to use. Also you can choose your favourite bowl from three types of sizes according to use.

Urushi technique: Honkataji

Material: Natural lacquer and Zelkova wood

Maker: Wajima Kirimoto

The unparalleled durability of Wajima lacquerware is the result of both the high quality of the lacquer refining process and the composition of the undercoating pioneered by Wajima. A finely powdered mineral called jinoko( a type of diatomaceous earth) is used for the undercoating. This undercoating is much more durable than the rice powder, which is most commonly used to fix the lacquer to the wooden core. The special undercoating and the up to 8 layers of lacquer made Wajima lacquer so durable.
